What is home health care? 
 
Home health care is ordered by a physician to provide both preventive and post-hospital care for patients who require a skilled medical need; namely, nursing and physical or occupational therapy.

What is the time period for home health services?
 
It depends upon the condition of the patient. Physician authorizations for home health care services are necessary every 60 days.

Does my patient need to be hospitalized to qualify for home health services?
 
No. Home health care may be utilized as preventive medicine to enhance overall patient care. Our goal is to reduce acute care hospitalization (ACH).
  • For example, Ms. Roberts is an 88-year old female with a history of falls in the bathroom. A home health safety evaluation may be ordered by you for a physical therapist, who will concentrate on gait and strengthening exercises.
  • Occupational therapy may be ordered as well to assist with bathroom mobility skills and general education for the patient on safe transfers.
  • In addition, a shower chair or other medical equipment may be ordered to assist the patient. A home health clinician will instruct the patient on the use of the equipment.
 
 
Does my patient need to be home bound?
 
Yes. If your patient is home bound by use of a wheelchair, walker or otherwise dependent upon another person, the patient qualifies for home health services. A patient may be able to leave the home for physician appointments, church and the barber.
 
 
Does Medicare pay for home health services?
 
Yes. Medicare covers home health in its entirety.
 
 
Does private health insurance pay for home health services?
 
Yes, depending on the plan coverage.
